I followed the installation guide, but when I start installing the
opkg -dest usb install tar I received an error that there's no space left on the device.

any idea on how to solve this problem? or how to restage the entire device so I can just redo all steps of the tutorial?
I allready tried the firstboot command, and restarted the machine, but since no files are removed, I keep getting the same error...

My guess is that your flash drive may not be mounting.

can you run the commands "dmesg", and "df" and post the output from each?

So /mnt/usb is mounted.

There are two parts to make the "opkg --dest usb" work:

1. "dest usb /opt" need so be in your /etc/opkg.conf file. This defines the "usb" destination for opkg

2. you need to create a symlink for /opt to the usb mount:
"ln -s /mnt/usb /opt" is the command from the script.
To test that this is working, do "cd /opt"
you should land in /mnt/usb

I wonder if it could also be a bad thumb drive, looks like there is space but maybe its throwing errors on a write. Or perhaps something got installed to the / partition that we didn't want to. Your / partition is a lot fuller than I think it should be. My gut is that is your problem, although its weird that a firstboot didn't clean it up.

Here is what my df output looks like on a completed build:

I would maybe suggest re-flashing with the current image.
Log into the router.
cd to /mnt/usb
wget downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/ar...ashfs-sysupgrade.bin
rename it 703.bin
(mv openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr703n-v1-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin 703.bin)

Stay in that directory and write the firmware with mtd -r write 703.bin firmware

after its done, reboot and telnet in to start the build process again.

i'm trying to install additional packages but i can't install them because theres no space on usb. what im doing wrong?
i've add line to "/etc/opkg.conf" using vi "dest usb mnt/usb" but no success.
